“The war photographers most fervent wish is for unemployment”

Robert Capa - Hungarian-American war photographer

The art project I am working on will rely on both words and images to tell Jack’s story. While we have a lot of words, we have limited images. These three sections are a visual archive resource for that effort. Each section has a slightly different agenda that is described below. A big thanks to Jim Emme for his work in scanning and saving many of these items for the family.

These archive only includes images of Jack. The index takes a shot at chronology. We have very few images of Jack during his time of service. The last few images were taken in England and are referred to in one of his letters.

This archive focuses on physical places and is grouped into the three phases of Jack’s service.

“USA” takes Jack from High School through Basic Training. “England” covers Jack’s deployment to England and further training and preparation for the D-Day invasion. “France” covers the actual invasion and the “Normandy Breakout” as well as the liberation of Paris.

I have included my detailed spreadsheet of Jack’s Service Timeline. This document combines information from many sources to create a road map of Jack’s Service set in a historical timeline. This document combined with the images is a great companion with the Map section. You may want to print it out as a reference while you wonder through all this.

This archive is a landing place for any objects or key documents that helped build Jack’s story. It is also a landing place for images of military gear and equipment from the era that will be a resource to me while I develop my art project. Jim Emme’s scanned data base has many more documents than what I have shown here and thanks again to Jim for that effort.
